Ph.D., D.B.A. and higher doctorates at universities in India and abroad, with guidance from admission to degree award.
A doctorate takes years. After admission come registration, coursework, a research proposal, the research itself, publications, progress reviews, the thesis and finally the viva. Many scholars, especially working professionals and people returning to study, find the middle of that journey harder than getting in.
Revamp Consultancy stays with you through all of it. We help you choose the right university and programme, complete admission, and then keep guiding you at each stage until the university awards your degree.
You pursue the research. We provide the guidance, coordination and academic support around it.
Four kinds of doctorate, and they are not interchangeable. This table shows what each one is, who it is for and how long it usually takes.
| Programme | Typical duration | Who can apply |
|---|---|---|
| Research doctorate | ||
| Ph.D. (full-time)Doctor of Philosophy | 3 to 6 years | A master's degree with at least 55% marks, or a four-year bachelor's degree with at least 75%. Admission through a national or university entrance test and an interview. |
| Ph.D. (part-time)For working professionals | 3 to 6 years | The same academic eligibility, plus a No Objection Certificate from your employer. Many universities set a four-year minimum for part-time scholars. |
| Integrated Ph.D.Master's and Ph.D. in one programme | 5 years or more | A bachelor's degree in the relevant subject. Offered by selected institutes, mainly in the sciences and engineering. |
| Professional doctorate | ||
| D.B.A.Doctor of Business Administration | 2 to 4 years | A master's degree, usually an M.B.A., and several years of managerial experience. Offered mostly by universities and business schools abroad. |
| Higher doctorates, after a Ph.D. | ||
| D.Litt.Doctor of Letters | As per university ordinance | A Ph.D. and a record of post-doctoral research and publications in the humanities, social sciences, management or related fields. |
| D.Sc.Doctor of Science | As per university ordinance | A Ph.D. and a record of post-doctoral research and publications in science, engineering, technology or allied disciplines. |
| LL.D.Doctor of Laws | As per university ordinance | A Ph.D. in Law and a record of post-doctoral legal research. |
| Honorary recognition | ||
| Honorary doctorateHonoris causa: Ph.D., D.Litt., D.Sc. or LL.D. | Not a course | Conferred by a university on people it chooses to honour for outstanding contribution. It is not earned through study and is not a substitute for a Ph.D. |
Every programme is offered by the university under its own statutes and the applicable regulations. Eligibility, mode, duration and fees differ between universities and are revised from time to time. We confirm the current rules for each university on your shortlist. The M.Phil. has been discontinued in India and is no longer a route to the Ph.D.
Every Indian university must follow the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. Here is what they mean for you in plain terms.
A two-year master's degree after a three-year bachelor's, or a one-year master's after a four-year bachelor's, with at least 55% marks. A four-year bachelor's degree with at least 75% also qualifies. Reserved categories get a 5% relaxation.
Through UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE or a similar national test, or the university's own entrance test, followed by an interview where you discuss your research interest.
A minimum of three years including coursework and a maximum of six. Universities may allow up to two more years through re-registration. Women and scholars with disabilities may get a further two-year relaxation.
Taught in the first stage of the programme. It covers research methodology, research and publication ethics and subject papers, and you must pass it to continue.
A Research Advisory Committee approves your proposal and topic. You present your progress to it each semester and act on its advice.
After a pre-submission presentation and a plagiarism check, the thesis is evaluated by your supervisor and external examiners, followed by an open viva voce.
The usual pathway
You are based at the university for the length of the programme. This suits fresh postgraduates, fellowship holders and anyone who can step away from work.
Continue your career and pursue your research. The UGC regulations permit a part-time Ph.D., and each university decides whether to offer it and on what terms.
The UGC does not permit Ph.D. programmes in online or distance mode, and in a public notice issued with AICTE it has said that online Ph.D. programmes offered by edtech companies with foreign institutions are not recognised. Revamp Consultancy does not offer or promote online or distance-mode Ph.D. programmes in India. If someone offers you one, ask us before you pay anything.
The university matters more for a Ph.D. than for any other degree, because you will work with one supervisor and one department for years. We shortlist with you, then check each option before you apply.
Public universities across India
Ph.D. and, at many universities, D.Litt., D.Sc. and LL.D. Admission is competitive and usually tied to a NET, GATE or university entrance score. Part-time seats, where offered, are limited.
UGC recognised, in most states
Ph.D. in full-time and part-time modes across a wide range of subjects, with admission through the university's own entrance test and interview. This is where most working professionals find a workable part-time route.
We do not publish a list of universities here, because what is open changes with every admission cycle. Admission, registration, evaluation and award of the degree are decided solely by the university. Ask us which universities are open for your subject in the current cycle.
Higher doctorates are the most senior research degrees a university awards. They recognise a substantial body of original work produced after the Ph.D., and each university sets its own ordinance for them.
For scholars with distinguished post-doctoral research in literature, languages, the humanities, social sciences, management, education and related fields.
For scholars with exceptional post-doctoral contributions in science, engineering, technology, health and allied disciplines.
For advanced research in law and interdisciplinary legal studies, pursued after a doctorate in law.
Most universities ask for some years of research after the Ph.D. before you can register, commonly three or more, and allow between two and five years to complete. Some permit part-time registration. Because there is no single national regulation for these degrees, the university's ordinance is the rulebook, and we read it with you before you apply. See also our Law programmes page for the LL.D.
The Doctor of Business Administration is a doctorate for experienced managers. It is often compared with a Ph.D. in Management, and the two serve different purposes.
An academic research degree. You identify a gap in what is known and add to it, usually with a career in teaching or research in mind.
A professional doctorate. You apply research methods to a real problem from your own industry or organisation, while continuing to work.
If your goal is a teaching post in an Indian university or college, or any role where the rules ask for a Ph.D., choose a Ph.D. that follows the UGC regulations. A D.B.A. from a foreign institution, particularly one studied online, may not be accepted as its equivalent. If your goal is professional standing, deeper expertise and applied research in your industry, a D.B.A. from a properly accredited university can serve you well. We talk this through with you before recommending either.
A doctorate overseas works differently from one in India. In most countries you apply to a supervisor or a funded project, and your research proposal carries more weight than an entrance test.
| Country | Typical Ph.D. length | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 3 to 4 years | Research from the first year, with little or no coursework. A master's degree and a strong proposal are usually expected. Funding comes through university and research council studentships. |
| United States | 4 to 6 years | Two years of coursework and qualifying examinations, then the dissertation. Many programmes admit directly after a bachelor's degree and fund scholars through teaching or research assistantships. |
| Canada | 4 to 6 years | A structure similar to the United States, normally after a master's degree. Finding a supervisor who agrees to take you is often the deciding step. |
| Australia | 3 to 4 years | A research degree on the British model. Entry usually needs a master's by research or an honours degree, and scholarships can cover both fees and living costs. |
| Germany | 3 to 5 years | Either an individual doctorate under one professor or a structured doctoral programme. Public universities generally charge little or no tuition, and many doctoral researchers hold paid positions. |
| Ireland and wider Europe | 3 to 4 years | Structured programmes, many taught in English, often attached to funded research projects. |
| Singapore and Malaysia | 3 to 5 years | Close to home, with well-ranked research universities. Singapore offers funded places on a competitive basis; Malaysia is a lower-cost option with flexible entry. |
Examples of universities that Indian scholars commonly apply to. Openings depend on your subject and the supervisors available.
Most D.B.A. programmes are part-time and built for people in full-time work. Durations run from about two to four years.
A doctorate earned abroad may need an equivalence certificate before it is accepted for higher study or employment in India. Since April 2025 the UGC issues these under its regulations on foreign qualifications, and qualifications earned through franchise arrangements are not considered. Several of the D.B.A. programmes above are delivered largely online, some through Indian edtech platforms. Check accreditation in the home country and how the degree will be treated in India before you enrol. We help you verify both.
Institutions are listed as examples and not as a ranking or a complete list. Programme length, entry requirements, fees and funding change each year. For visas, language tests and the wider application process, see Study Abroad and Test Preparation.
An honorary doctorate is recognition, not a qualification. A university confers it, under its own statutes, on a person who has made a significant contribution to society, business, culture, public service, science, education or another field.
Where a suitable opportunity exists, we help eligible candidates understand the process and prepare for it.
Twenty kinds of help, arranged in the order you are likely to need them. Take all of it, or only the parts where you are stuck.
A doctorate should represent the scholar's own work. Our role is consultancy, mentoring, academic review, editorial help, documentation and coordination. The research, the data and the thesis are yours.
Revamp Consultancy is an educational consultancy and academic support provider. Admission, registration, appointment of the supervisor, evaluation, examination and award of the degree are governed solely by the rules of the respective university and the applicable statutory authorities.

No. The UGC regulations do not allow Ph.D. programmes in online or distance mode, and a degree earned that way will not be recognised. What working professionals can do is register for a part-time Ph.D. at a university that offers it. You still attend coursework, present your progress and defend your thesis at the university.
Yes, through the part-time mode, where the university offers it for your subject. You will need a No Objection Certificate from your employer and must be able to attend the university when required. We help you find universities whose attendance pattern you can realistically manage.
No, and you should be cautious of anyone who does. Admission, thesis approval, the viva result and the award of the degree are decided by the university. We improve your preparation and keep you on track at each stage.
At least three years, including coursework, and normally no more than six. Most part-time scholars take four to six years. Universities can grant an extension through re-registration, and women and scholars with disabilities may be allowed additional time.
Not always. Candidates with NET, JRF, GATE or a similar qualification are often exempt from the university's written test and go straight to the interview. If you have none of these, you take the university's own entrance test. Rules differ between universities, so we check them for you.
No. The research, data, analysis and writing must be your own. We guide your method and structure, review and edit your drafts, check formatting and references, and prepare you for presentations and the viva.
No. A Ph.D. is an academic research degree aimed at creating new knowledge. A D.B.A. is a professional doctorate in which experienced managers apply research to practical business problems. For teaching posts in India, a Ph.D. under the UGC regulations is the safer choice.
It depends on the university, how the programme was delivered and what you need it for. A degree from a recognised university abroad can be submitted to the UGC for an equivalence certificate. Degrees earned through franchise arrangements are not considered, and online doctorates need particular care. We help you check before you commit.
An earned D.Litt., D.Sc. or LL.D. is a higher research degree that you register for after your Ph.D. and complete through original work that is examined. An honorary doctorate carries the same names but is conferred as an honour, without study or examination.
An honorary doctorate is a mark of respect and not an academic qualification. Convention is to show it as honorary, for example by adding "(Honoris Causa)", and not to present it as an earned doctorate in academic or professional settings.
