Engineering entrance and admission

JEE Main

The national test for B.E. / B.Tech. at NITs, IIITs and many state and private institutions. JEE Advanced follows for the IITs.

State admissions

TNEA counselling in Tamil Nadu (on Class 12 marks), KCET in Karnataka, AP EAPCET and TS EAPCET in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, KEAM in Kerala.

University tests

Many private universities hold their own entrance test in place of a national or state score.

Lateral entry

Diploma holders are admitted to the second year through state lateral entry tests or on diploma marks.

GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, for M.E. / M.Tech. admission and stipends, and for many public-sector jobs.

Merit admission

Many approved institutions admit directly on 10+2 or diploma marks, without an entrance test.

Management programmes

You can start management straight after school with a B.B.A., or come to it after any degree with an M.B.A. or P.G.D.M. Graduates of engineering, science, arts and commerce are all eligible.

M.B.A. or P.G.D.M.?

The two are taught to a similar standard and employers treat them alike. The difference is in who awards them.

M.B.A.

Master of Business Administration
Awarded by
Universities and their affiliated colleges
Qualification
A master's degree

Directly accepted for Ph.D. admission and teaching posts

P.G.D.M.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management
Awarded by
AICTE-approved autonomous institutes
Qualification
A postgraduate diploma
Curriculum
Set by the institute, so it can follow industry more closely
Good to know
Check that the institute holds AIU equivalence if you plan further study

Specialisations

In an M.B.A. or P.G.D.M. you study common subjects in the first year and specialise in the second. Many B.B.A. programmes offer the same choices.

Questions students ask us

What is the difference between B.E. and B.Tech.?

For admission, jobs and higher study, none. Some universities name the degree Bachelor of Engineering and others Bachelor of Technology. Both are four-year programmes with the same recognition.

I have a polytechnic diploma. Do I have to start B.Tech. from the first year?

No. With a three-year diploma in a relevant branch you can join the second year of B.Tech. through lateral entry and finish the degree in three years.

Can I get an engineering seat without JEE?

Yes. Many state and private institutions admit through state counselling, their own test, or on Class 12 marks. JEE Main is essential mainly for NITs, IIITs and centrally funded institutions.

I did not study Mathematics in Class 12. Can I still do engineering?

Most branches require Mathematics. A few universities admit students from other subject combinations to selected branches and provide bridge courses. Share your subjects with us and we will tell you what is open to you.

Can I do an M.B.A. after engineering, science or arts?

Yes. An M.B.A. or P.G.D.M. is open to graduates of any discipline. Engineers with an M.B.A. are in demand for operations, product and consulting roles.

Do I need work experience for an M.B.A.?

Not for the regular two-year M.B.A. or P.G.D.M., which most students join straight after their degree. Executive M.B.A. programmes are the ones that ask for experience. If you want to study while you work, see our WILP Programs page.
