WILP Programs

Earn your next qualification without leaving your job

Work Integrated Learning Programmes let working professionals study for a diploma, B.Tech., M.Tech., M.B.A. and more, with classes held outside working hours.

What a Work Integrated Learning Programme is

A Work Integrated Learning Programme (WILP) is a diploma or degree designed for people who are already employed. You keep your full-time job. Classes are held in the evenings, at weekends or on holidays, and your project work is built around what you do at your workplace.

The idea is simple: what you study during the weekend, you use at work on Monday, and the problems you meet at work become your assignments.

You will see the same kind of programme called “for working professionals”, “flexible timing”, “lateral entry for working professionals” or “executive”. The name matters less than who has approved it.

Three meshing gears labelled Theory, Practice and Work Integrated LearningTheoryPracticeWork IntegratedLearning
Theory and practice turn together. Your classroom learning and your daily work drive each other.

Who it suits

WILPs are built for people who cannot stop earning in order to study. Almost every programme asks for at least one year of full-time work experience.

How a semester runs

Timetables differ between universities, but most work-integrated programmes follow these six stages each semester.

  1. You stay in your job

Your employment continues as usual. Many universities ask for an experience letter or a no-objection certificate from your employer.

  2. Classes outside working hours

Teaching is scheduled in the evenings, at weekends and on holidays, in person at the institute, with live or recorded sessions in support.

  3. Laboratories and practicals

Engineering subjects need hands-on work. Expect to attend laboratory sessions, sometimes backed up by virtual labs.

  4. Assignments from your workplace

Case studies, assignments and projects draw on real problems from your own job, so the study feeds straight back into your work.

  5. Semester examinations

You sit examinations at the end of each semester, to the same pattern the university uses for its regular students.

  6. Project and award

A final project, often carried out at your workplace, completes the credits needed for the diploma or degree.

The rules that decide whether a WILP is valid

“WILP” is a name universities use, not a category in law. For engineering diplomas and degrees, what counts is the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) framework for working professionals, which was reintroduced in 2023–24. These are its main points.

Work experience
At least one year of full-time, regular work experience.
Location
The programme is meant for people who can reach the institute regularly, so AICTE's guidelines look at where you work and live in relation to it. We check this with you for each institute you are considering.
Entry qualification
The same as for lateral entry into the second year of the regular programme. For a B.Tech., that normally means a diploma in engineering.
Class timings
Evenings or other flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, arranged to fit working hours.
Syllabus and examinations
The same syllabus and the same examination pattern as regular students of the institute.
Seats and approval
A separate, limited batch for working professionals in each approved course. The institute needs AICTE's approval to run it, and should be able to show you that approval.

What this means in practice

An engineering programme for working professionals is a regular, face-to-face programme taught at convenient hours. It is not a distance degree. Expect to attend classes and laboratories in person.

If you live in Puducherry

Many of the universities that offer these programmes are in other states. Before you enrol, ask the university where classes, laboratories and examinations are held and how often you need to attend, so that you can plan your travel and leave. We help you get these answers.

Sources: AICTE Approval Process Handbook 2024–25 to 2026–27 and AICTE's guidelines for working-professional courses, aicte.gov.in. This is a plain-language summary for students, not legal advice. AICTE's own notices are the final word.

Four kinds of provider, four sets of rules

Not every programme for working professionals comes under the same regulator. Knowing which kind you are looking at tells you what to check.

AICTE framework

Universities and engineering colleges

Diploma, B.Tech. and M.Tech. programmes for working professionals, taught on campus at flexible hours under the rules above. Most private universities that advertise a “WILP” belong here.

UGC approval

BITS Pilani

BITS Pilani, a deemed university and Institution of Eminence, has run Work Integrated Learning Programmes since 1979. UGC has approved their continued offering. Admission is selective, and the programmes are aimed mainly at employees in technology, manufacturing and related industries.

Own Acts of Parliament

IITs and other national institutes

Several IITs run web-enabled or executive M.Tech. programmes for people in work. Entry is by the institute's own selection process, and some programmes ask for a letter of support from your employer or a short stay on campus.

UGC-DEB entitlement

Management and computer applications

M.B.A., M.C.A., B.B.A. and B.C.A. can also be studied as fully online degrees from UGC-entitled universities, which is often the simpler route for these subjects. See Online Programs

Education-technology platforms such as upGrad market and support many programmes for working professionals. The platform provides the learning technology and student support; the degree is awarded by the university. Always check which university's name will appear on your certificate, and verify that university, not the platform.

Check before you pay

Six checks that protect two or three years of evening and weekend work. We go through them with every working professional we counsel.

  1. Confirm that the university is recognised on the UGC website, ugc.gov.in.
  2. For Diploma, B.Tech. and M.Tech., ask for the AICTE approval that covers the working-professional course in your branch and year.
  3. Ask where classes, laboratories and examinations are held, and how many days you must attend each semester.
  4. Make sure the attendance schedule is practical from where you live and work.
  5. Ask to see a sample degree certificate and marksheet, and read what is printed on them.
  6. Apply on the university's own admission portal, and pay fees only to the university.

Two offers to be careful about

Some programmes are sold to working professionals in a form the regulators do not accept. A qualification earned that way may not be recognised for jobs, promotions or further study.

Engineering degrees taught only online or by distance

UGC does not permit engineering programmes in online or distance mode, and AICTE's courses for working professionals are taught face to face. A B.Tech. or M.Tech. from a university that never asks you to attend classes or laboratories should make you ask more questions.

The national institutes set up by Acts of Parliament are a separate case, because they award degrees under their own Acts.

LL.M. for working professionals

In June 2025 the Bar Council of India stated that an LL.M. offered in online, distance, blended, hybrid or part-time form, including an “Executive LL.M.” or “LL.M. (Professional)”, is not recognised unless the Council has given its prior approval.

If an LL.M. is your goal, ask the university for its written Bar Council approval for that exact programme and mode before you enrol.

Questions working professionals ask

Is a WILP degree equal to a regular degree?

Where the programme is run under the proper approval, you follow the same syllabus and sit the same examinations as regular students, and you receive the university's own degree. Individual employers, public-sector recruiters and universities abroad set their own requirements, so check for the specific job or course you have in mind.

Can I do a B.Tech. completely online?

No. Engineering is not permitted in online or distance mode. A B.Tech. for working professionals is taught in person at flexible hours, and you should expect to attend classes and laboratories.

How much work experience do I need?

At least one year of full-time experience for most programmes. Some universities ask for two years, or for experience in a field related to the course.

Does my employer have to be involved?

Usually only on paper: an experience letter, a joining letter or a no-objection certificate. A few programmes, such as web-enabled M.Tech. degrees at national institutes, also ask your employer to support your project work.

I live in Puducherry. Which programmes can I realistically join?

It depends on the subject. For engineering, look first at institutes you can travel to comfortably, and at national institutes whose programmes are delivered online under their own Acts. For management and computer applications, a UGC-entitled online degree is often the more practical choice. We help you compare them.

What does a WILP cost?

Fees are set by each university and change every year. As a rough guide from fees published in 2026, a full B.Tech. for working professionals ranges from about ₹2.5 lakh to more than ₹8 lakh across universities. Always take the figure from the university's own fee notice.

Can I study for an LL.M. this way?

Be very careful. The Bar Council of India does not recognise an LL.M. offered in online, distance, hybrid or part-time form without its prior approval. Ask the university for that approval in writing.
