Online degrees from UGC-entitled Indian universities, with live and recorded classes, digital study material and proctored examinations.
An online programme is a full degree delivered over the internet by a university that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognised or entitled to teach in online mode. Classes, study material, assignments and student support all reach you through the university's learning platform.
It is not the same as a short course on a learning app. The university admits you, you sit its examinations, and you receive its degree.
Under UGC regulations, a degree earned online from a recognised university is treated as equivalent to the same degree earned on campus.
Study in the evenings and at weekends, and watch recorded classes when a live session clashes with work.
You can enrol with a recognised university in any state without relocating.
The regulations allow learners living in India or outside India to enrol in online programmes.
Finish a degree you had to pause, or add a postgraduate qualification to move ahead.
UGC's framework for online learning is built on four parts, known as the four quadrants. A properly run programme gives you all four for every course.
Video and audio lectures, with animations, simulations and virtual labs where the subject calls for them.
E-books, PDFs, illustrations and demonstrations: the reading material for each course.
Related links, open content, case studies and articles that take you beyond the syllabus.
Quizzes, problems and assignments with solutions, plus discussion forums where doubts are cleared.
Live sessions and discussion forums run alongside these. Universities track your participation through the learning platform, so plan to log in regularly rather than only before examinations. End-of-term examinations are conducted in proctored mode.
These are the degrees most widely available in online mode. Specialisations differ from one university to another, and each university's approved list is published session by session.

UGC does not permit programmes in certain disciplines, or their allied areas, in online or distance mode. If someone offers you one, it will not lead to a recognised degree.
UGC has also withdrawn online and distance programmes in subjects covered by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021.
Where a degree such as B.A. offers several subjects, only these subjects are withdrawn. The rest of the degree continues.
Online degrees in India are governed by the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, and their later amendments. They are administered by UGC's Distance Education Bureau (DEB). These are the points that matter most to a student.

Five checks that take a few minutes and protect years of work. We go through them with every student we counsel.

IITs, IIMs, IISc and other Institutes of National Importance are set up by Acts of Parliament and do not come under UGC's purview. Their online programmes are therefore not on the UGC-DEB list, and that is not a sign that anything is wrong.
These institutes award their qualifications under their own Acts. What you need to check is different: exactly what you will receive at the end, and how you get in.
Some programmes lead to a full degree. Many others are executive certificates or diplomas. Ask which one is printed on the final document.
Entry is usually through the institute's own qualifying test or selection process, not open enrolment.
Bachelor's degrees in data science and related fields, online and blended management programmes, and master's-level programmes for working professionals.
Several programmes include in-person examinations or short campus modules. Check the schedule before you commit.

You can also earn a degree from a university abroad without leaving India. These programmes follow different rules from Indian online and distance degrees, so it helps to know where they stand.
The degree is awarded by the foreign university under the rules of its own country. It does not appear on the UGC-DEB list, and the DEB-ID does not apply to it.
Many are run with an education-technology partner that provides the learning platform and student support, while the university sets the curriculum and awards the degree. Common choices are the M.B.A., master's degrees in data science, artificial intelligence and computer science, and the D.B.A.
Where an Indian university or employer asks for it, equivalence is decided by UGC under its 2025 regulations on foreign qualifications. The university must be recognised in its home country. Qualifications earned through a franchise arrangement are not considered, and degrees earned online may be examined more closely.
UGC's equivalence regulations do not apply to professional qualifications such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, law and architecture, which are governed by their own councils in India.

Both lead to the same recognised degree. The difference is in how you study and where the university can reach you.

We remain available through your first semester and examinations if you need help.
Under Regulation 22, an online degree from a UGC-recognised university is treated as equivalent to the same degree in conventional mode. Individual employers and universities abroad set their own entry requirements, so check for the specific job or course you have in mind.
Yes. The regulations allow a learner living in India or outside India to enrol in an online programme of a recognised university.
In proctored mode. The exact format differs between universities, so ask how and where examinations are conducted before you enrol.
There are usually two admission cycles a year, for sessions beginning around the start and the middle of the year. UGC announces a last date for admissions for each session.
IITs, IIMs, IISc and other Institutes of National Importance do not come under UGC's purview, so their programmes are not listed by the Distance Education Bureau. See the section on national institutes above for what to check instead.
It is not covered by the UGC-DEB system. Where equivalence is needed, UGC decides it under its 2025 regulations on foreign qualifications, and the university must be recognised in its home country.
UGC guidelines allow a student to pursue two academic programmes at the same time in certain combinations, for example one on campus and one online. Each university's own rules also apply, so we check this for your case.
