Complete Class 10 or 12 through open schooling

Secondary, Senior Secondary and skill programmes from open school boards in India, for learners who could not finish school the regular way.

School can be finished later, and from home

A Secondary (SSLC) or Senior Secondary (+2) certificate is the entry ticket to college, to most jobs and to many licences. Many people miss it because of money, health, family or a failed examination, and then find every door asks for it.

Open school boards exist for exactly this. You enrol without attending a regular school, study from the board's material in your own time, and write a public examination. If you pass, the board awards a Class 10 or Class 12 certificate.

Revamp Consultancy helps you pick the right board, level and subjects for what you want to do next.

Three programmes, one board examination system

The details below are typical of open school boards in India. Subjects and rules differ a little from board to board, and we confirm them for the board you choose.

Another route: private or external student mode

This is different from open schooling. Some universities and examining bodies register learners as external (private) students. You study on your own, at your own place and time, and attend only to write the examinations at the institution's campus or a centre it recognises.

Acceptance of these certificates differs between colleges, examinations and employers, so the checks below matter just as much here. We tell you which institution a programme is from before you enrol.

Is the certificate valid?

This is the right question to ask first. The answer has two parts: what a board's recognition rests on, and whether the place you want to go next accepts it.

Statute

Set up by law

A recognised board is established by an Act of Parliament or a state legislature, or by a government order. That is what gives it authority to conduct public examinations and issue certificates.

Further study

AIU equivalence

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) grants equivalence to school board certificates for admission to further studies. Ask whether the board holds it.

School boards

COBSE membership

The Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE) is the association of school boards. Membership shows the board is counted among them.

Recognition of a board is one thing. Admission to a particular course, eligibility for a particular examination, and appointment to a particular post are decided by that university, examining body or employer under its own rules.

Check before you enrol

We go through these with every student, for the board and the goal they have chosen.

  1. Decide what the certificate is for: a degree, an entrance examination, a job, a licence or study abroad.
  2. For a degree, ask the college or university whether it admits students from the board you are choosing.
  3. For NEET, JEE or a state entrance examination, read the eligibility section of the current information bulletin, including the subjects and practicals it requires.
  4. For a government post, read the qualification clause of the recruitment notification.
  5. Enrol only through the board's own admission process, and keep a receipt for every payment.

What you need for admission

You can apply through Revamp Consultancy or on the board's own website. Scanned copies of these documents are uploaded at registration.

Questions students ask

Is an open school certificate equal to a regular school certificate?

A recognised open school board awards Class 10 and Class 12 certificates in its own right. Whether a particular college, examination or employer accepts a particular board is decided by them, so we check this for your goal before you enrol.

Do I have to attend classes?

No daily attendance is required. You study from the board's material in your own time. Subjects with practical work need you to complete the practicals as the board directs.

Can I write the examination in Tamil?

With the board we mostly work with, question papers are in English or Hindi and answers may be written in Tamil. Tamil is also available as a language subject. This differs between boards, so we confirm it before you enrol.

I failed some subjects in another board. Do I have to start again?

Not necessarily. Boards have a separate route for learners who are re-appearing. Bring your mark sheet and we will check what applies to you.

Where will I write the examination?

At a centre allotted by the board, usually its accredited institution.

Can I go for NEET or engineering after open school Class 12?

It depends on the subjects you take, including practicals, and on the eligibility rules of that examination for the year you apply. Check the current information bulletin before you choose your subjects.

Is there an upper age limit?

Open schooling is meant for learners of any age above the minimum. Boards do not generally set an upper age limit.
