Why study in Canada?

Canada gives you two clear routes. Universities offer academic and research degrees. Public colleges and polytechnics offer hands-on diplomas and postgraduate certificates built with employers.

Many programmes include co-op terms, where you work in a paid placement as part of the course and graduate with Canadian experience.

Canada now limits the number of new study permits each year, so a strong, well-documented application to the right institution matters more than before.

QS numbers are from the QS World University Rankings 2027 and refer to the parent university. Entries marked as pathway or foundation lead into the named university through a partner college. Always check that the institution is a designated learning institution and that your programme qualifies for a post-graduation work permit; we do this with you.

Costs and entry requirements

The Canadian study permit

Five steps from your offer to your permit. All applications now go through the regular stream, so apply early.

1

Get your acceptance

Receive a letter of acceptance and pay the deposit.

2

Get your PAL

The institution arranges your provincial attestation letter if you need one.

3

Prove your funds

Buy a GIC or show equivalent funds, plus first-year tuition.

4

Apply online

Submit the application with your study plan and documents.

5

Biometrics and medical

Give biometrics and complete the medical exam.

While you study

Full-time students at designated institutions can work off campus for up to 24 hours a week in term time and full-time in scheduled breaks. A co-op placement needs a separate co-op work permit, which we help you request with your study permit.

After you graduate

The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is an open work permit for up to three years. Whether you qualify depends on your institution, your level of study and, for many college programmes, whether your field is on the eligible list. You also need an English or French test result.

Recent changes

Canada caps new study permits each year and shares them between provinces, which is why most applicants need a PAL. From 2026, master's and doctoral students at public universities are exempt. The living funds to show rose to CA$22,895 in September 2025.

Planning a medical career in Canada?

Seats in Canadian medical schools for international students are very limited. Most Indian doctors reach Canada through the MCC exams and a residency match. Our MBBS pages explain the route.

Common questions

Short answers to what students and parents ask us most.

College or university: which is right for me?

Choose a university for an academic or research degree. Choose a public college or polytechnic for a practical diploma or postgraduate certificate with co-op. Both can lead to a work permit if the programme qualifies.

What is a PAL and do I need one?

A provincial attestation letter confirms that your place counts within the province's share of study permits. Most college and undergraduate applicants need one. Master's and doctoral students at public universities are exempt from 2026.

How much money do I have to show?

First-year tuition, plus CA$22,895 in living funds for one student, plus travel. The amount is higher if family members come with you, and Quebec sets its own figure.

Will my course qualify for a post-graduation work permit?

Not every course does. It depends on the institution, the level and, for many college programmes, the field of study. We check this before you accept an offer.

Can I work while I study?

Yes, up to 24 hours a week off campus in term time and full-time in scheduled breaks, once your course has started.
