Eight pathways, and the countries that lead to each

Countries, programme facts and universities, arranged by where you intend to practise after you graduate.

Start with where you want to practise

Each pathway below lists its countries, what the programme looks like in each, and the universities we guide students to. If you have not chosen a pathway yet, compare all eight first.

Programme facts are a general guide for each country. Length, intake and entry requirements differ by university and change from year to year, and we confirm them in writing, with the full cost, before you apply.

See the stages after graduation

You do not have to study in the UK or Ireland to practise there

Students who graduate from an acceptable medical school in any other country can sit PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 for the UK, or PRES for Ireland, then register and practise.

Training posts after registration are won through open competition.

See the stages after graduation
1

Medical degree

A primary medical qualification the regulator accepts. It can be from India, Georgia or any other country, as long as the medical school is acceptable.

2

PLAB or PRES

UK: an English test (IELTS or OET), then PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, which follow the UKMLA standard. Ireland: the Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES).

3

Registration and training

Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or the Medical Council of Ireland, then supervised posts and specialty training.

4

Practice

Work as a registered doctor within that country's health system.

USA pathway

For students aiming at residency training in the United States. Medicine in the USA is a graduate course, so most Indian students on this pathway study at a Caribbean medical school built around the USMLE, or take the USMLE after a degree elsewhere.

United States

Medicine is studied after a bachelor's degree. Very few medical schools admit international students, and competition for those places is intense.

Degree
MD
Duration
4-year bachelor's, then 4-year MD
Taught in
English
Intake
August
Entry
Bachelor's degree with pre-medical subjects, MCAT, interview

Caribbean medical schools

Schools in Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Dominica, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, with basic sciences on the island and clinical rotations in teaching hospitals, many of them in the USA.

Degree
MD
Duration
4 years, or 5 to 6 with pre-medical
Taught in
English
Intake
January, May and September at many schools
Entry
Class 12 with sciences for pre-medical entry, or a bachelor's degree

Accreditation differs widely from school to school. Check ECFMG eligibility, USMLE results and residency outcomes for the specific school.

  3. ECFMG certification
  4. Residency (NRMP Match)
  5. USMLE Step 3 and state licence

You do not have to study in the USA to practise there

Students who graduate from an eligible medical school in any other country can sit USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, obtain ECFMG certification and apply for residency.

If you may want to practise in India later, take advice first. Clinical rotations in a second country do not fit the NMC rule that the whole course is done in one institution and one country.

See the stages after graduation
1

Medical degree

A medical school whose graduates are eligible for ECFMG certification. Many Caribbean schools are designed around this route.

2

USMLE and ECFMG

USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, an English test (OET Medicine) and ECFMG certification.

3

Residency

A residency position through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), known as the Match.

4

Step 3 and licence

USMLE Step 3 and a state medical licence, then independent practice.

Canada pathway

Canada does not offer a direct-entry MBBS after Class 12. Medicine is a graduate course, places for international students are very few, and the route to practice is among the most demanding. We include it so that you can plan with accurate information.

Canada

Graduate-entry medicine and selected international pathways. Most students first complete a bachelor's degree with a very high GPA.

Degree

Duration
Bachelor's degree, then 3 to 4 years of MD
Taught in
English or French
Intake
August or September
Entry
Bachelor's degree, very high GPA, prerequisites, MCAT, interview

Most Canadian medical schools admit few or no international students. Many students instead study elsewhere and then take the MCCQE and NAC Examination.

After graduation
  1. Medical education
  2. MCCQE and NAC Examination
  3. Residency (CaRMS match)
  4. LMCC and provincial licence

You do not have to study in Canada to practise there

Students who graduate from an acceptable medical school in any other country can sit the MCCQE and the NAC Examination and apply for residency through CaRMS.

Residency seats for international medical graduates are limited and often depend on citizenship or permanent residence.

See the stages after graduation
1

Medical degree

A medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as acceptable in Canada.

2

MCCQE and NAC

The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE, formerly MCCQE Part I) and the NAC Examination.

3

Residency

A residency position through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). Seats for international graduates are few, and eligibility often depends on immigration status.

4

LMCC and licence

The Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) and registration with the medical college of your province.

Students who graduate elsewhere can pass the language exam and the recognition exam of the European country they choose, then register and practise there.

Europe does not have one medical licence. Georgia and Armenia are not in the European Union, so a degree from there, like one from India, must go through the recognition process of the country where you want to work.

See the stages after graduation

The country's own recognition or knowledge exam, for example the Kenntnisprüfung in Germany, the Kunskapsprov in Sweden or the EVC in France.

4

Registration and practice

Registration with the national authority, such as the Approbation in Germany, then practice in that country.
